John Barleycorn
(Dancing at Lughnassadh)

Lyrics and Music written by Ylathia Rhayne

Come to the circle, come out of the mists
Slip out of the shadows, merry meet my sisters
We dance for the harvest, barefoot in this moonlit grove
We dance on the silken threads of a delicate magick web we wove

And ringing with laughter, rejoicing in song
My heart joins the rhythm of a drumbeat thundering steady and strong
A drumbeat sounding steady and strong

We call to the four winds as shadows fall across the land
We enter the circle with the moon in our hearts and straw in our hands
By the light of the balefire on the chill of an autumn night
Put a torch to the scarecrow- watch the flames leap higher
The embers burn bright…
The flames leap higher, the embers burn bright…

And ringing with laughter, rejoicing in song
My heart joins the rhythm of a drumbeat thundering steady and strong
A drumbeat sounding steady and strong

Hail, hail the Wickerman, hail the Wickerman…

Hey John Barleycorn, there you go,
Showing the little ones how high to grow
Running like a wildman over the hills
No matter how fast you go, we’ll catch you still

Hey John Barleycorn, where you been?
The sheaver has a place for us to throw you in
See, John Barleycorn there you go,
Threshing out your pieces as the chill wind blow
Popping and crackling in my fire
Hopping and cackling in my fire

Hail, hail the Wickerman, hail the Wickerman…
